St Charles College Boarding - Private Boarding School in Pietermaritzburg

Boarding Life at St Charles College

Boarding at St Charles College provides boys with a structured and enriching environment where they can thrive academically, socially, and personally.

Located in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, our private boys’ school provides a unique boarding experience for boys Year 4 (Grade 4) to Sixth Form (Grade 12), offering both weekly and termly boarding options.

Whether boarding is a practical solution for families living far from school or an opportunity for personal growth and independence, every boy at St Charles College benefits from mentorship, friendships, and a strong sense of community that lasts a lifetime.

At St Charles College, our boarding is age specific. Whilst our primary school boarders share one house, high school boarders live amongst their peers per grade. This system supports a nurturing, age-appropriate focus per year. It also develops the boys into very tight-knit groups during their collective tenure in boarding.

At St Charles College, boarding is tailored to each age group. Our primary school boarders share a single house, while high school boarders live in grade-specific houses among their peers. This structure provides an age-appropriate, supportive environment, helping to reduce inter-grade bullying and encouraging boys to build strong, close-knit friendships throughout their time in boarding.

Our Boarding Houses - A Home for Every Age

At St Charles College, each boarding house is carefully designed to meet the developmental needs of its students. From the youngest primary school boarders to our senior high school boys, each house provides a safe, supportive, and age-appropriate environment where boys can thrive academically, socially, and personally.

PENNEFATHER HOUSE

Boarding for Primary School Boys

Pennefather House provides a secure and nurturing environment for our youngest boarders, helping them transition smoothly into boarding life. Boys from Year 4 to Form 1 (Grades 4 – 7) share a double-story house, with bedrooms and lockers upstairs and communal spaces, gardens, and play areas downstairs.

  • Supervised homework: Boarding staff guide boys at the end of each day in a dedicated homework room.

  • Pastoral care: A resident housemaster and four junior staff members live onsite, ensuring guidance, oversight and support are always available.

  • Health and safety: The sanatorium is located less than 50m from our Prep Boarding House, with a school nurse on duty 24/7 and private hospitals within 5kms for serious medical care.

  • Meals and routines: Our Primary School Boarders enjoy three meals a day in a dining room, shared with our Senior School boarders. A boarder master sits with the boys for all meals to ensure that eating habits are watched closely. Cell phone use is monitored and limited to 30 minutes per day, helping boys balance connectivity with routine and focus.

Our age-appropriate setup allows younger boarders to develop independence, responsibility, and confidence within a structured and supportive environment, while still enjoying the benefits of a through-school community. As part of a through-school, our Senior Primary boys enjoy the space and facilities available to the entire school while closely monitored by staff, who provide routine and control specific to the needs of younger boys.

JOLIVET HOUSE

Second Form (Grade 8) Boarding

Jolivet House marks an exciting new chapter for boys entering High School boarding at St Charles College. Designed specifically for Second Form (Grade 8) boarders, the house provides the ideal balance of independence, structure, and support as boys adapt to the demands of high-school life.

  • Purpose-built for Form 2: Dormitories feature half-walls dividing sleeping spaces into pairs, encouraging social interaction while offering personal space.

  • Strong pastoral care: The housemaster, Dr Miguel Cavero, together with a dedicated team of staff, creates a nurturing and inclusive environment that supports both academic and emotional growth. Regular communication between parents and boarding staff ensures families remain connected and informed as their sons settle into high-school life.

  • Supervised study: Homework is completed under the guidance of a boarder master and prefects in a communal study area, helping boys establish healthy study habits.

  • Community and culture: With capacity for 60 boys, 4 prefects, and 4 boarder masters, Jolivet House promotes teamwork, friendship, and responsibility.

  • Balanced routine: Common rooms and recreation spaces offer relaxation on weekends, while structured activities keep boys engaged and connected.

Our Second Form (Grade 8) boarding programme helps boys build confidence, self-discipline, and belonging within a close-knit peer group – laying the foundation for success through their high-school years and beyond.

BOWDEN HOUSE

Third Form (Grade 9) Boarding

Bowden House represents the next step in our structured boarding journey, designed to support boys as they continue to grow in independence and responsibility. Serving as the home for Form 3 (Grade 9) boarders, Bowden provides a strong sense of community while encouraging personal maturity and leadership.

  • Supportive environment: The housemaster and boarding team ensure that every boy is well known, supported, and guided through this key developmental stage.

  • Room setup: Boys are accommodated two per room, each with their own desk and study space. This layout encourages quiet focus and organisation. Encouraging independence, and with more personal space and responsibility, boys learn to manage their time effectively and take ownership of their routines.

  • Academic focus: Structured evening homework sessions continue under supervision, helping boarders strengthen study habits and maintain balance between academics, sport, and social life.

  • Team spirit and belonging: Bowden House fosters friendships built on shared goals and mutual respect, forming the foundation for the senior boarding experience ahead.

  • Balanced lifestyle: Recreational areas and social spaces give boys opportunities to relax, build camaraderie, and participate in weekend activities that strengthen bonds within the house.

Bowden House is where our boarders begin to demonstrate leadership and resilience – qualities that prepare them for the responsibilities and opportunities of senior boarding at St Charles College.

GORDON HOUSE

Fourth Form (Grade 10) Boarding

Fourth Form (Grade 10) boarders enjoy their own boarding houses, designed to balance privacy with community living. Each boy shares a cubicle-style room with one other, complete with beds, cupboards, chairs, and desks. This arrangement gives boys age-appropriate independence while ensuring they remain part of a close-knit group.

Boarders complete their homework at the desks in their rooms, with supervision and support from prefects and the master on duty. A spacious common room and kitchenette provide welcoming shared spaces for relaxation, conversation, and connection after a busy day.

Form 4 (Grade 10) is a formative year for young men as they prepare for senior sport and manage the demands of Cambridge IGCSE examinations. The structure and self-discipline built in earlier boarding years become vital as boys learn the value of consistent preparation and organisation. With steady guidance and a supportive environment, this year helps each boy develop the focus and maturity needed to thrive in his senior years.

At St Charles College, we are proud that our boarding offers the perfect balance of independence, academic support, and brotherhood — a space where boys grow in confidence as they take the next step toward leadership within our College community.

HURLEY AND DES WHITE HOUSES

Boarding for Sixth Form College Students

For boarding purposes, Fifth and Sixth Form (Grades 11 and 12) make up the Upper School at St Charles College. These senior boarders enjoy the privilege of living in our dedicated Upper School boarding houses – Hurley House and Des White House – thoughtfully designed to balance privacy, comfort, and community living.

Each boy shares a well-appointed cubicle with one other, furnished with beds, cupboards, chairs, and desks. The buildings have been carefully planned to offer easy access to outdoor and communal areas, creating a relaxed yet productive environment. Each house features a common room with recreation equipment, a kitchenette, and DSTV, providing a welcoming space for downtime and connection after a busy school day.

Multiple boarder masters live within each house, ensuring consistent supervision and pastoral support. Mr Nick Nel, the Housemaster, who also serves as Director of Boarding, maintains oversight of both Grade 11 and Grade 12 houses. This continuity ensures stability and guidance for our senior boarders. Prefects are also appointed to support daily routines, academic focus, and community spirit. Boarders complete their prep at the desks in their rooms, with structured guidance from staff and senior boys.

This continuity between Hurley House (Fifth Form – Grade 11) and Des White House (Sixth Form – Grade 12) allows for a seamless transition as boys progress into their final years. By the time they enter Cambridge AS and A Level studies, they are already well-adjusted to the boarding rhythm and expectations. This stability enables them to focus on academics, leadership, sport, and preparation for tertiary study – all within a supportive and familiar environment.

Our Upper School boarding experience reflects the essence of St Charles College life – independence balanced with guidance, and brotherhood rooted in shared purpose.

A BOY'S PERSPECTIVE

A Day in the Life of a High School Boarder at St Charles College:

A Day in the Life of a boarder at St Charles College

Character and Values

Consideration for others is essential to a happy and properly run Boarding Establishment. In this regard, the demands of boarding are far more stringent than what many will experience at home, simply because there are so many more to consider in a boarding environment.

Awareness of how voice, actions, and care of belongings affect those who share your living space is essential for boarders and a happy boarding environment. In this respect, our boarding at St Charles College in Pietermaritzburg offers boys the opportunity to develop personal disciplines and interpersonal skills which will prove to be an invaluable head start for life beyond the safety of school.

In essence, we aim to provide the spaces – physical and emotional – for our boarders to develop into socially aware, productive ambassadors of not only St Charles College but each of their families and communities too.

Structure and Communication

Living spaces consist of a collection of buildings. The boarding houses are situated within the secure bounds of the College. Each grade is accommodated in a different building. Administration, sanatorium and dining facilities are common to all grades. This structure minimises opportunities for domination by seniors and also implies that boys in each cohort spend five years together as a unit. This provides plenty of time to build trust, contacts and friendships for life.

We have boarders from throughout KwaZulu-Natal and a considerable number of boys from; inter alia, Zambia, Tanzania, Swaziland, Lesotho, Botswana, Malawi, Reunion and Mauritius. From time to time, we even have boarders from as far away as Europe and China. Consequently, our boarding population is cosmopolitan, to the benefit of all our boys. In addition, many of our boarders come from farming families and these rugged, unpretentious boys with healthy interests are appreciated by our community.

Boarders are allowed to go home every weekend of the year, with only two exceptions. Boarders who do go home for the weekend may spend Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings at home, as boarders are given the choice of returning to boarding on either Sunday evening or Monday morning. Because of Saturday sports commitments, those who regularly go home for the weekend may spend Friday night in boarding. In short, we offer a great deal of flexibility where weekends are concerned.

But what of the termly boarders? Will they be lonely and bored over the weekends? The answer is ‘no’. Every Saturday of the school year includes a full set of sports fixtures, and many boys will be busy with sports from early morning until early evening.

This means that weekends only consist of Sundays. In addition, St Charles College has a considerable complement of full-time boarders, and most Saturday evenings will see around one hundred boys enjoying dinner in the dining room.

Those who stay in boarding over the weekend are offered Youth on a Friday evening. Chapel attendance on set Sunday evenings is compulsory for boys who stay in over the weekend. Despite opportunities for outings, typically, our boarders choose to relax on the school property on Sundays. All school sport facilities (tennis courts, squash courts, fields, basketball courts etc) and certain music rooms are available to boarders on a Sunday.

Because St John’s D.S.G. for girls is geographically close to St Charles College in Pietermaritzburg and because many St Charles College boys have sisters at St John’s, there is a close relationship between the two schools. Boarders from the two schools have Chapel together and the girls from St John’s are often seen supporting their friends on the side of the sports fields on a Saturday. From time to time, boarders from the two schools share weekend activities.

The boarding team consists of:

  • A housemaster, who is responsible for the boys in a particular grade
  • Boarder masters. Each Housemaster is assisted by a small team of boarder masters
  • The Head of Boarding
  • The Boarding Secretary
  • The school nursing team
  • The catering, cleaning and maintenance teams
